COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Aging citizens are a resource for our communities, not a liability and we honour them.

The goal of the community work that Calgary Family Services facilitates is to engage older adults in projects that benefit both themselves and their communities.

The community development staff works with Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Gujarat speaking communities in select city neighbourhoods.

Community projects include:

  • classes (computer literacy, Tai Chi practice and English as a second language)
  • seminars (safe driving, avoiding fraud, healthy living)
  • cross cultural celebrations (Asian New Year celebration, cultural exchange tours)
  • time trading
  • social support opportunities
  • neighbourhood snow removal programs.
  • The Older Adult Team community development workers also play central roles in a number of collaborative agency initiatives including facilitation of the Senior Centres' Network, the Alliance for Active Aging, Stories of Home (a digital story telling project), Get up and Go (a transportation initiative) and the Northwest Seniors' Network.
